Department of Computer Science at FEE CTU celebrates 60 years of innovation

The Department of Computer Science at the CTU Faculty of Electrical Engineering is celebrating 60 years at the forefront of the digital revolution. From its modest beginnings in 1964, the department has grown into a leading research center, driving advancements in artificial intelligence, software engineering, and computer networks.

Early Days (1950-1989)

The department's roots trace back to the 1950s and the pioneering work of Professor Antonín Svoboda, a visionary who laid the foundation for computer development in Czechoslovakia. Established in 1964, the department quickly became a hub for software development, contributing significantly to the field with projects like the FELSYS system. Throughout the 70s and 80s, the department expanded its research activities and embraced the rise of personal computers, providing students with access to cutting-edge technology.

A Decade of Transformation (2014-2024)

The last 10 years have been a period of remarkable growth and innovation. Under the leadership of Assoc. Železný, prof. Pěchouček, and doc. Vokřínek, the department has:

Modernized its curriculum: Introduced new specializations in machine learning, autonomous systems, and advanced software engineering to equip students with the skills needed for the 21st century.
Embraced online learning: Pioneered distance and online learning methods, ensuring educational continuity during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.
Expanded international collaborations: Fostered partnerships with leading universities in Europe, the United States, and Asia through Erasmus+ exchange programs.
Excelled in research: Established itself as a leading research center in artificial intelligence, particularly in autonomous systems, machine learning, and intelligent systems for autonomous driving.
Forged industry partnerships: Collaborated with technology giants like Gen (formerly Avast), CISCO, and IBM to drive applied research and technology transfer.
