RCI Offsite in Ricany

The RCI offsite took place at the Oaza complex in Ricany. The first day started with a short introduction from Jiri Matas who welcomed everyone and took the position of the conference chair for the rest of the off-site. 

 

Day 1

The first presentation was described as a “small keynote talk” and was given by Jakub Marecek who introduced his research regarding  the Human-compatible Artificial Intelligence with Guarantees. He presented different aspects of it together with social impact, influence and possible applications. The presentation was followed by a lively discussion. The second presentation was given by Jan Belohoubek who introduced Challenges in Side-Channel Analysis: Natural and Synthetic Effects. 

After a coffee break that included networking between different research groups, the program continued with a talk from Denys Rozumnyi that gave a very graphically pleasing presentation regarding his research on 3D reconstruction of fast-moving objects. Its great upside was the possibility to use this research in many different domains including the filmmaking industry. Next was Vaclav Pavlovec with his talk about Mixed Labeling: Integrating Internal and External Labels which was followed by a lunch break. 

Before the next block of presentations, several networking activities took place both on-site of the event and on the premises of Ricany as a group of researchers decided to explore the local brewery. 

 

The first afternoon block of talks was started by Karel Zimmermann and the talk about Learning the Shape of Terrain From Robot Trajectory. The second presentation in this block was given by Tomas Oberhuber who presented the Approaches to Optimization Problems: Partial Differential Equations vs Machine Learning. This talk introduced an interesting comparison between solving differential equations and using machine learning to solve the same problems and pointed out some upsides and downsides of both ways. 

After the second coffee break, we were facing the last block of presentations which opened with Petr Cizek’s talk SCARAB II: A Small Versatile Six-legged Walking Robot where he entertained the crowd with many examples, videos and information about the robotic research at the AIC’s robotic laboratory. SCARAB II which was present on the presentation provided us with a live demo. The last talk of the day was given by Ondrej Suchy who presented a talk about Constant Factor Approximation for Tracking Paths and Fault Tolerant Feedback Vertex Set. 

 

Day 2

The second day started with a presentation from Adela Subrtova Hairstyle Transfer Between Portrait where she introduced her interesting research and also provided us with a fun demo to play with during the coffee break. The second presentation of the day was given by David Futschik regarding his work STALP: Style Transfer with Auxiliary Limited Pairing. After the amusing break, there were the last three presentations to go.

 

Firstly, Radek Janca presented his work on Mapping of Epileptic Networks for Surgical Treatment of Focal Epilepsy which was standing out due to its medical focus and also very practical use case. Next was a rather theoretical presentation from Tomas Werner regarding Block-coordinate Descent in Convex Optimization. The last presentation was given by Claudio Kozicky who talked about Joint Direct and Transposed Sparse Matrix-Vector Multiplication for Multicore CPUs. The last block of presentations was followed by lunch which concluded this two-day event full of inspirational talks and networking across the big RCI research cluster.
